The problem started many, many years ago. People who do not understand that the biblical symbolism, still the blind led by the blind. I'm referring to Genesis 9:7, in the KJB:
"...be ye fruitful, and multiply;
bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein."
Until we accept that the teaching in the Bible has nothing to do with religion, but with the joy we can experience once we learn how to live, on Earth, our study of scriptures is virtually a waste of time. The religious organizations have usurped the wisdom of the Bible to control their followers, exactly as political parties do so to this day.
Had we accepted the true symbolic meaning of the statement above, we would not have to face the problem we are facing today. The problem of absurd overpopulation by the human species, at the expense of virtually all other species.
The meaning of the phrase in Genesis is quite simple. It does not refer to our sex life, only to the thoughts that our brain is capable of generating. "Be fruitful in your thoughts, multiply the diversity of ideas, and do so not just in some imaginary realm but on Earth, in the Phenomenal Reality in which you live. In which you enjoy your becoming."
Originally man's thinking had been limited to the procurement of food and security. Children were necessary to provide protection in the old age. This was the sum-total of man's ambitions. Most other species limit their lives to these two prerequisites to this day. "Free time" is allotted to fun and games.
Yes, all animals enjoy it.
And then a very wise man said, let your mind be fruitful. Let your ideas multiply creating diversity. Let your creativity enhance the Reality in which you live. Don't just take from it, but give. Give ideas, enrich your lives. You now have the ability, the power, to do so.

Unfortunately, the biblical formula stating that Many are called, Few are chosen, not to mention the Masses that never even heard the call, let alone follow it, held true.
A few began thinking. Many have tried, but they veered into the materialistic pursuits (creating gadgets rather then adding beauty to our environment). As for the masses, they've taken the biblical quotation literarily. They multiplied their sex life, filling our environment with masses of polluting, destructive, unthinking progeny in their own image and likeness.
Imagine: In 1939, just before the WWII there had been about 2 billion people in the world. One would have thought that the war would have reduced the world population considerably. It did, by more than 3%. That's a horrifying 60 million people. And yet...
And yet by today, by 2021, according to Worldmeter, we reached 7.9 billion people. If we indulge in sex at the present rate, soon we shall accomplish destruction of most other species, and masses will starve, but not before they impregnate a few females first.
Hence the virus. Weather the virus was purpose-made by some billionaires to protect their interests, or if the Omnipresent Intelligence, which controlled nature over billions of years, took steps to protect ALL NATURE and not just the most abusive specie, remains an open question.
Yet, of one thing we may be sure. If we don't find a way to curb our sexuality, nature will. Soon. Nature strives on diversity, not on abuse by a single species.
