Immortality is greatly misunderstood. Your body is not immortal, but its energies are indestructible. They can be metamorphosed into different rates of energy of which it is made. What is immortal is the Individualized essence of the Omnipresent Energy of Creative Consciousness, of which the whole Phenomenal Universe is a transient yet continuous expression. Just as you are.
However, while this Individual fraction of Omnipresent is your true Self (your I AM, or your high self), It may choose to retain some traits of creative ability evolved by your Ego, which, as we know, is generated by our biological computer we know as our brain.
Since only certain aspects of our individuality created by our brain may be worth retaining, that part of our Ego might not be fully recognizable in the next reincarnation. Only very advanced individuals are aware of their previous lives. Only those whose previous lives are truly worth remembering. Memory is just as much an energy as any other aspect of our illusory reality.
If you choose to identify yourself with your Higher Self, then the chances are that your immortality will be assured to a much greater degree. To my knowledge there are only two factors that assure our immortality:
1. is to add to the diversity of the Phenomenal Universe, and
2. is to make sure that our contribution to the diversity enhances the transient reality.
Not very complex, but we must remember that since the Phenomenal Universe has neither beginning nor end, adding anything original is no easy matter. On the other hand, there are no two symphonies that are alike, nor two identical flowers, let alone two identical people. Uniqueness of all aspects of the Phenomenal Reality is a miracle in its own right.
You might notice that neither of the factors are intended to enhance you as a person, but only your usefulness to the Whole. In time we shall all learn that we all are indivisible, inseparable components of the Whole... even as every drop in the ocean is an integral part of it. And, while our Egos allow us to feel temporarily apart, it also allows us to add to the diversity of the reality in which we have our becoming.

While there are countless ways to assure our immortality, in fact as many and as diverse as humanity itself, the book below might give you a starting point from which to embark on your individual journey. While the title states that it was, or has been, "secret teaching", now, at the onset of the Age of Aquarius, the secret knowledge is intended to be made available to all of us.
The "Many that were called" some 2000 years ago, have now not only grown to almost 8 billion, but thanks to the new means of communication, inter alia the internet, the teaching is available to enormous masses of people. We no longer have an excuse for not doing our part for the Universe, nor for not earning our immortality.
