There appears to be only one purpose to old age. We can no longer perform earth shuttering deeds in any physical, mental (memory fails us), or even emotional disciplines. They all appear to demand more energy than we seem to have at our disposal. But there is one, singular trait which is offered us only at the tail-end of of our lives:
SPECIAL SENSE OF HUMOUR
There is a fundamental difference between the sense of humour of the young and of the old. They, the young-ones, usually laugh at others. We have a much greater gift. We are disposed to laugh at ourselves. While we are no longer able to perform great feats, we reap rewards for previous years, for having enhanced the Universe by our presence.
We are given so many gifts.
We are given deafness not to hear unpleasantness. Depreciated vision, not to see ugliness. Sense of tiredness, not to live in constant atmosphere of competition about nonentities. We no longer feel that we have to go to the gym to develop a macho physiques, or to beauty salons to change our appearance to be admired by others. We are admired by those who love us, instead. And while others might suffer from all those limitations, we learn to laugh at ours.
Laughing at oneself is a gift not understood by many. We laugh at the weaknesses of our illusory body. We know that our real I AM is perfect, immortal, endowed with fantastic gifts of which we are only vaguely aware. We know that life on Earth is a wonderful dream, and that soon we shall awaken in Devachan, wherein our dream will assume a much greater experience of reality, perhaps comparable to Lucid Dreams. We shall fly, swim under water, visit other planets, experience at will the Celestial Music — the Harmony of the Spheres(1), in fact we shall live our dreams to a much more intense measure.
Life is a magnificent gift that wrenches order out of chaos. And with age we, you and I, and everyone willing to accept true reality, can experience those gifts to a much, much greater degree. That's the real meaning of evolution. Not in making gadgets which make our gifts obsolete, but in manifesting those gift that fulminate within us, desperately trying to get out, to manifest in our Consciousness, to become real.

I often think that our Cats and Dogs know much more than they pretend. Most of them understand our thoughts, though we seldom understand theirs. After all, they've never been expelled from the Garden of Eden. They are still there, rejoicing a reality which we, humans, have long lost.
And that's the beauty of old age.
The
reality of Earth is designed to teach us to give. Beyond Earth, we collect
the interest on the gifts we've bestowed on others. It's a wonderful
cycle and we can derive joy from both. Also, with old age, we begin to collect when we're still here...
Those inner wonders are beginning to come back to us. Slowly yet persistently. Faster, if we allow them to do so. We, and we alone, create realities. The wondrous realities that cats and dogs still seem to enjoy.
Shouldn't we join them?
(1) In a theory known as the Harmony of the Spheres, Pythagoras proposed that the Sun, Moon and planets all emit their own unique hum based on their orbital revolution, and that the quality of life on Earth reflects the tenor of celestial sounds which are physically imperceptible to the human ear.
