It may have started in India. People were in great need of deities who, or which, would regulate their lives in an orderly fashion. The Greeks suffered from the same need, though in a very different way.
The Indian Trimurti fulfilled the functions of creation, maintenance and destruction, and were personified by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Greeks preferred to enlarge their Pantheon to a dozen, although that was still humble compared to the Egyptians who counted theirs in well over 2,000.
Yet the Christians returned to the Trinity, though in a different fashion. They defined their gods as the Father, corresponding to Brahma, yet here the similarity to the Hindu Trimurti broke down. The next person of the Christian Trinity was the Son, followed by the Holy Spirit, an omnipresent incorporeal Entity that seemed to influence the human behaviour a little in the nature of Vishnu. Why they invented such complexity no one knows.
So much for (a brief) human perception of divine history.
Perhaps it is time to awaken our senses to a more practical reality. After all, the Christian theology of today has little to do with the teaching of Christ. We have the advantage of science which recently opened our minds to the Quantum Theory.
And yet our scientists forgot Tesla's dictum that to understand the Phenomenal Universe we much think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. The scientists forgot about the frequency of vibration although the vibration is at the very base of understanding our reality. They initiate the waves observe by our scientists. From the infinite frequency of vibration of the Energy of the Omnipresent Creative Consciousness, all other energies are formed by slowing down their frequencies. If we add to it that the infinity of time allowed this Primal Energy to evolve phenomenal means of increasing the diversity of the Universe, we have the answer to all our prayers.
That's us, we are the means and, probably, countless other species throughout the ever-expanding Phenomenal Universe.
All we need do is to increase the frequency of vibration of our thoughts to connect with the Creative Energy of the Universe, and the creative potential becomes ours without the intervention of any gods. In fact, we gain the power of metamorphosing the Frequency of the Infinite Vibrations of the Omnipresent Energy into slower frequencies. This alone gives us the creative powers of gods.
Hence, the ancient prophets were right. We are gods. Or at least the divine potential abides within us, perhaps just awaiting for us to awaken to Its presence. There are no limits to this power.
Good luck.

I took the liberty of illustrating this philosophy in a fictional form of my trilogy. After all, what matters is the journey towards Heaven that abides within us. Hope you enjoy it.
