The few shows I watch on TV are about animals. As I switched on, a female wolf was feeding her three pups. Motherly love was evident. Some distance away, a lone wolf was crossing the expanse of barren terrain. He looked peaceful and lonesome. He didn't get very far. Three wolves, detached themselves from the pack of some eight or nine, raced good distance, and attacked the lone traveler. Soon they had him bleeding, torn to shreds. He hasn't had a chance.
One shouldn't travel alone in the wolf country, I mused.
And then it came to me...
What of love... of compassion... Are they only human traits?
It seems, that the evolution of Ego assures the survival of an individual or the group to which it belongs. It is its only concern build into our genes — into the genes of humans, and wolves, and all carnivores. Though now omnivores, we, humans, remained carnivores in nature.
Enter the Age of Aquarius.
It calls for the evolutionary transition of our consciousness. Such transition will be reminiscent of warfare. Ego and the incipient Higher Self will fight for dominance. To quote Mr. Spock of the famous Star Trek series "Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." We can but hope that this maxim will become more than a dream asserted by an actor.
This time "the many" deals with life of Earth.
Yet, in the transition period we shall lose all tolerance for our enemies, or those we regard as such. Gradually we shall become concerned with the welfare of the whole species, if not the totality of life on Earth.
We shall stop killing indiscriminately to protect what we consider our own. Carnivores of other species kill to eat. For countless generations, we killed out of greed.
The fundamental difference between flora and fauna is that flora cannot prepare its own food, whereas fauna must do so. Food, as we know, it the sine qua non prerequisite of survival. Hence, it overrides all other considerations with a single exception. Parents, and particularly the females of the species, are willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect their progeny. This is manifested from the lowest to the highest genera of fauna. Yet it also is built into our genes solely to protect a particular species.
Humans, and all forms of wild life are genetically disposed to kill in order to survive. This is true at an individual, family and national level. In this we differ little if at all from the lowest levels of carnivores.
We are a species of killers.
Strangely enough, this trait is not manifest among the herbivores. The original reason for carnivores was intended to maintain a balance in nature — to stop the herbivores from depleting our atmosphere from the necessary ingredients of the air we breath. Herbivores, if not kept in check, might deplete the very food they need to survive themselves. Thus, together, they maintain the balance which we, humans, have inherited from them.
Alas, soon we became omnivores.
We no longer ate to sustain our lives.
We are for the pleasure of eating.
We became uncontrolled anomalous hedonists.

Yet, to survive, we must maintain the balance which we have inherited. Balance is sustained mostly by maintaining a state of diversity, which would not allow any species, or any genera to overrun their intended numbers. Unfortunately, the human species did just that. If we do not take steps to remedy this situation, the Universal Laws will. Perhaps, we see the evidence of such a correction right now.

In the Western hemisphere, the first attempt to instill laws of balanced survival, had been enumerated in the Decalogue defined by Moses (Hebrew: Moshe). He flourished in 14th-13th century BCE. To my knowledge future directives, such as constitutions, social and criminal laws, and other governmental controls did not deal with the problem in any more advanced ways. They were concerned mostly with the survival of a group, and not the life on Earth in general.
Perhaps, the Age of Aquarius will awaken awareness of our Higher Selves, of the "big picture", and make us aware of the totality of life and not just the human species. Perhaps it should be mentioned that there is no evidence that Universal Laws (often referred to as God) have any interest in individual welfare. Such is left to our Ego. Every individual has enormous as yet untapped powers to protect him/her self.
If we do not learn more about the Universal Laws, we might be erased from the equation of life, as it is being done with other species on a daily basis. Phenomenal evolution is a science of trial and error.
Good luck.
