There is a fundamental difference between the Ego and the Higher Self. Both are states of consciousness. The purpose of Ego is not only to protect the uniqueness of our personality, but also to act as the testing ground for the enhancement of the phenomenal universe in providing diversity. Our ongoing contribution is the cause of the continuous and accelerating expansion of the phenomenal universe.
Ego is the cumulative effect of the energies generated by evolution in general, and our biological brain in particular.
On the other hand, our Higher Self, is the individualization of the Omnipresent Energy of Creative Consciousness, and thus is concerned with the "big picture", such as the evolutionary aspect of the different species that comprise the flora and fauna of the phenomenal reality. It is, in fact, the energy that introduces and maintains the energy of life throughout the phenomenal Universe.
The eventual unification of the Higher Self and Ego is defined in biblical terms by the phrase: "I and my father are one." Such unification bestows "divine" creative powers on the individual.
The unification of the two states of consciousness is the ultimate reason for all evolution. While the Potential of the Universe is infinite, the Energy of Creative Consciousness is imbued with the attribute of metamorphosing the infinite frequencies of vibration of its energy into slower rates, thus creating what we know as the Phenomenal Universe. Hence, we must never forget that while the Original Source of the Creative Energy is omnipresent and undetectable to human senses, It and It's individualizations are ONE.
As is the Potential and the Phenomenal Universe.
They differ only in the frequencies of vibration.
The intangible Omnipresent Consciousness of the Creative Energy is the Energy of Life. This process is carried out by the instrument we know as Mind, which is both, inseparable trait of the Omnipresent Creative Energy and, at a later stage, that which is generated by the biological brains. The latter enables us to become aware of the I AM, which is the incipient union of the two states of consciousness.
I AM inspired the prophets of the past to become aware of the Potential Creative Energy to which they referred as divine power.
It case you have qualms about being left behind in this evolutionary process, let me assure you that, even as the Potential is infinite, so is the process of metamorphosis. This process began in ancient infinity and continues to offers us immortality.
