Since Albert Einstein declared that ALL is energy, and that energy cannot be destroyed (although the frequency of vibrations can be metamorphosed into infinite other rates), our thoughts and emotions became immortalized. Furthermore, as we now have ample evidence that we share generating of these two energies with a vast array of fauna, there is little doubt that we shall meet animals in our future lives, future reincarnations, be they on Earth or on Devachan.
And now a little food for thought.
Karma.
Karma is a Universal Law of the Phenomenal Universe which restores balance upset by whoever upset it. No wonder the ancient wise man stated that we should "do unto others as we would have them do unto us." This addresses directly the Law of Karma.
Now let us think how various animals will treat us in future segments of our becoming. Energies cannot be destroyed, said Einstein, hence balance must be restored, or our World would have long fallen apart. And the World, we now know, is eternal. We might not be held responsible for killing animals for food, but we most certainly are, and will continue to be responsible, for the physical and emotional let alone mental pain to which we subject other species.
If and when the majority of the energies we create are negative, i.e. upsetting the state of balance (the Middle Path or the Event Horizon) we might suffer the majority the energies that combine to make us the individuals we were, to be recycled in Black Holes.
I'd suggest that we be very careful how we treat all animals. Not just human but ALL. We are all made up of Energies. They used to call it Spirit. All else is illusion. A transient process of becoming.
Unfortunately, ignorance is not bliss.
The U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity concluded that "Every day, up to 150 species are lost." Let us make sure that we are not among them.
